Let me start by saying that my New Year's resolution this year was to read more books than last year, which was 15. I did realize that it would be hard since I have recently started going back to school full time, but I have really been slacking. This is the first book that I have finished this year and the only way I can see myself fulfilling my goal is if I start reading smaller books, which I don't foresee since the next book up is Ken Follett's World Without End.
I did take longer to read this book because I did a lot of pondering while reading it. I believe there are three types of books. The one's that I enjoy and are page turners and I get through them really fast, then there are those that don't really pull me in and I have to drag myself to finish them, and then there are my favorites, the one's that make me think and give me a whole new prospective. It takes me a long time to read the last kind, but these books stick with me. Stranger in a Strange Land was like that. I picked it up because it is a Science Fiction classic and it was more than just Science Fiction. There was a lot of philosophical points in the book, not that I agree with them, but something to think about. It is about a human, Valentine Michael Smith, that grew up on Mars and was raised by Martians. Earth found him and brought him back. Valentine tries to understand human ways and shares his knowledge of Martian ways. It is interesting to view our culture through an outside prospective. I recommend this book if only for you to understand my new favorite word grok and waiting til fullness.
